Framework for the counselling relationship

Having clear boundaries is important for the therapeutic relationship as between the counsellor and the client. The principal terms of the contractual arrangement that will apply to our work (unless negotiated otherwise) are set out below:

Confidentiality

Anything that is discussed in the therapy session is confidential. The only exceptions to this are where there may be risk of harm to yourself or others (particularly children) (and in which case we will discuss, but you give me permission to disclose this to the appropriate authorities), in connection with my own supervision, and or where the law requires disclosure.

If the session is carried out online you should be in a place where you cannot be overheard in order to maintain your confidentiality, and you should also be somewhere where you are unlikely to be disturbed and which is free of distractions.

Session times

Each counselling and psychotherapy session lasts for 50 minutes (individuals, and commences at the appointed time. Punctuality is important as time cannot be made up after the appointed time and the full fee will be payable.

Fees and cancellation

  • My current charge is £75 in respect of each session.
  • Payment for online sessions is to be made in advance by direct bank transfer.
  • The fees are reviewed periodically.

Not less than 24 hours previous notice is to be given if you are unable to attend an appointment. The full fee is payable if not. I will give you as much notice as possible if I need to cancel an appointment.

Out of session contact

Email, text, or telephone should only be used to arrange, re-arrange or cancel appointments. No material should be discussed through any of these media. All discussion should be contained within the therapy session.

I will respond to an email, text or voice message (in connection with appointments) within 24 hours, save when I may be on holiday or in exceptional circumstances.

We will need to agree a policy of how we respond to each other if we meet outside the therapy session. In general terms, I would not acknowledge you unless you acknowledge me first, and which is to preserve your confidentiality.

Get in touch

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling and psychotherapy works, or to arrange an initial appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of starting therapy, and whether I can help you.
